    Caroline Louise Mathis

    August 3, 1937 - January 18, 2021

    CAROLINE LOUISE MATHIS, age 83, passed away due to complications from a chronic health condition on January 18, 2021 at Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley, CA. Caroline had been a resident at Centinela Grand Skilled Nursing Facility in Perris, CA. for several years. Caroline was born in Saginaw, Michigan on August 3, 1937 to Robert J. Johnson, OH, and Wilhelmina H. Willy, MI.. She graduated from Saginaw High School Saginaw, MI. Caroline married her loving husband Henry W. Mathis in 1958. They had three sons, Mark Mathis, Bryan Mathis, Jeffrey Mathis, and one daughter, Betty Mathis-Ford. Caroline and Henry went on to move from Michigan to Southern California in the early 1960’s living in Maywood, Huntington Park, Ontario, Montclair, and Moreno Valley. Caroline worked at Gage Jr. High School in Huntington Park, CA as a campus Aide, and for American Medical Response Ambulance Service in South Gate, CA as a dispatcher. Her greatest accomplishments were as a fantastic loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt and homemaker, whose passion was loving and devoting her life to her family. Caroline enjoyed many hobbies, including bowling, crocheting, ceramics, painting and drawing. She was creative and artistic and loved to share her talent with her children and others. Caroline was a fabulous cook and her desserts were often in demand. She enjoyed family camping trips, a rare trip to the casino, shopping, socializing and spending time with her family and friends. She loved her pets, especially Valentino. Caroline was a member of the Elks Lodge/Emblem Club of Huntington Park, CA where she served as Chaplain. She held numerous PTA positions including PTA President at State Street Elementary School in Huntington Park. She served as a Leader for many years with the Rio Hondo Camp Fire Girls, and the Cub Scouts and Boys Scouts of America. She was involved with the Huntington Park City Council and school boards. Caroline was very active in volunteering for her children’s school sports, booster clubs and chaperoning countless field trips that are still remembered by many in Huntington Park. Caroline was preceded in death by her husband Henry W. Mathis (2004) Moreno Valley, CA, her sons Mark Mathis (2013) Perris, CA, Bryan Mathis, (2019) Hemet, CA, Jeffrey Mathis (2015) Phoenix, AZ, her sister Dolores Brown (2007) Saginaw, MI, and brothers Herman Johnson (1988), Saginaw, MI, Richard Johnson (2013),Colorado Springs, CO, Victor Johnson (2016), Pinckney, MI, and Bill Johnson (2016), Saginaw, MI. Also, her grandson, Robert Mathis (2007) Pahrump, NV. Surviving family members include her daughter, Betty Mathis-Ford, Rancho Cucamonga, CA, brothers Robert & wife Mary Johnson, Hortense, GA, Calvin & wife Jean Johnson, Saginaw, Mi, Sheldon & wife Jackie Johnson, Saginaw, MI, Knesley Johnson, Fostoria, OH, Craig Johnson, widowed, Dodge City (Harrison), MI, Scott & wife Kathleen Johnson, Saginaw, MI, and Bruce & wife Faye Johnson, Lancaster, TX, grandchildren Brandy Mathis-Mendez, Long Beach, CA, Eric Mathis, Long Beach, CA, Kamron Garner, Oceanside, CA, Kari Lynn Garner, Pueblo, CO, Amanda Lynn Mathis, Perris, CA,, Carolyne Mathis, Perris, CA, James & wife Yaneth Mathis, Morrisville, North Carolina, Krystal Mathis, Perris, CA, Brittany Krugman, Long Beach, CA, and Blake Mathis, Signal Hill, CA. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Nathan Mendez, Aidan Mendez, Isabella Hernandez Mathis, MacKenzie Anderson , Jasmine Mathis, Gavin Mathis, and Ryan Mathis. At the time of her passing she had over 40 cousins, 34 second cousins, 13 nieces and 11 nephews. Funeral services will be held graveside on April 13, 2021 at 11:30 a.m at the Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd.Riverside, CA 92518 with Pastor Ted Norton officiating. . Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Miller-Jones Mortuary in Perris, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Ramona VNA and Hospice, 890 W.
